News - 100Gbit Ethernet Report released by OIDA

In August 2006 the OIDA held a meeting to discuss the next generation Ethernet
requirements. The meeting included both ISP's, switch vendors, Venture capitalists and
component suppliers.

The key driver for 100Gbit Ethernet highlighted at the meeting was the expected growth in
video transmission over the fiber optic networks. It is expected to grow to over 60% of all
internet traffic in the coming decade. Several companies highlighted that growth of traffic
was continuing and that 'fatter' pipes were needed. Cisco Systems made two key
presentations at the meeting discussing the role of early adopters and the expected market
requirement in 2010.

Many component companies discussed the potential transceiver solutions available for
both single mode and multi-mode fiber applications. Companies presenting on the topic
included Finisar, JDSU, Picolight and EMCORE.

As the OIDA organizer of the meeting, a report prepared by Bill Ring has been released by
OIDA. This report is available through the
OIDA book store and is also available through
research and markets, a Dublin based company.
